Positive affirmations

Positive affirmations are mantras that we can repeat to ourselves to produce a more positive frame of mind. This positive attitude can then be the catalyst for real positive life change.

These are some examples of positive affirmations. Scroll through and see if any resonate with you.

How to work with Positive Affirmations

A good way to start working with mantras or affirmations is to pick a time that you can carve out 5 peaceful minutes everyday. Some people find first thing in the morning a good time for this, before even getting out of bed.

Choose an affirmation that you feel you need to hear. You may want to pick one of the above options, there are multiple books and websites dedicated to positive affirmations, or, of course, you can make your own.

To start take a deep breath in and exhale slowly. Clear your mind. Focus on the feel of the bedsheets surrounding you or chair underneath you. Feel the temperature of the air on your skin. Smell the air. Hear the sounds that float about you.

Now, focus on the words of your affirmation. If you feel comfortable, try saying the affirmation out loud. Repeat the affirmation either in your head or out loud. Start to believe the words that you are saying. Think about the meaning of the words that you are saying. Believe these words apply to your life as it currently is. Keep repeating the affirmation, try to keep this going for a minute or two.

It may feel weird doing this at first, you may not feel any benefit for a while. You may want to stop doing it.

Try to stick at it. Repetition is your friend here. Even if you feel sceptical, keep at it. It's only a few minutes of your day and it's unlikely to be doing you any harm. It may do some good. If nothing else it's a few minutes of calm that you're giving yourself each day.

Affirmations work best when repeated with heart. There may be a statement that you have a hard time in believing at first. Learn to tell yourself that the affirmation is reality. It may help to think of this as tricking your brain into a new reality. It's not much different to "fake it till you make it."

Affirmations in meditation

As you can probably appreciate, it’s helpful that you be in a relaxed state of mind when you use your affirmations. When you are deeply relaxed, your subconscious mind is more open to positive suggestions. Because of this, affirmations can be used to great effect in meditation.

There are some great guided meditations that work with positive affirmations on Insight Timer.

Another way to work with affirmations is just as you are getting ready for sleep. You may choose to repeat your affirmation to yourself for some moments before falling asleep each night. You may find it helpful to listen to recorded affirmations whilst you are falling asleep. This method will also utilise your relaxed state of mind and work with your brain whilst it's most receptive to these positive messages.
